Gardening Naturally with Claudia

Ground Covers - The Good, Bad, Ugly The idea of ground covers is to green the area and cover the ground.  Duh!!  I've spent years trying to find the ideal ground cover.  The idea sounds simple enough, but .... This is 'snow-on-the-mountain.' Other common names include Bishop's Weed, Gout Weed, Ground Elder. It's botanical name is  Aegopodium . a perennial, ground cover ...an Boy does it.  This plant spreads  by runners, under ground. Snow-on-the-mountain is very aggressive and  invasive.   Use a non-selective herbicide to the leaves to inhibit its spreading.  I'd use this plant in containers where you can restrict its growth.  But, as you can see, Gout Weed has moved all around my garden. Now I'm on a mission to remove it once and for all. Another 'goof' I admit to (Other's not so much) is 'creeping jenny'.  I initially loved the bright, gold shades it offered the garden.  But once again, ( ...

Vacuum Forming a Miniature Boat with Styrene Every Beach Hut needs at least a rowing boat! After countless trials making this with thin balsa strips I was a bit at a loss. But then I chatted with Dorota from  Miniafanaberia  about styerene and this got me onto the right track! I made the shape of the boat with foamboard layers and after thorough google video research about vacuum forming, I gave it a shot because I had a few glossy 2mm styrene sheets anyway (stashed away because I thought I would never use them..). First I made the vacuum box using a plastic box, made a hole big enough for the vacuum sucker, and closed the box with wood and plenty of wholes in it. I tried with two kind of frames. Sheet tacked onto the frame and sits on TOP of the box: good for small items because there is less styrene waste Sheet is clamped between two frames and is LARGER than the box: good when you need the entire sucking area of the box The great thing though: it worked first time!! And thi...

HDPE Sheet: A Versatile Solution for Industrial and Domestic Needs

Understanding HDPE Sheets High-Density Polyethylene, commonly known as HDPE, is a robust and versatile thermoplastic polymer. HDPE sheets are widely used across industries due to their impressive durability, impact resistance, chemical resistance, and low moisture absorption. Unlike traditional plastic materials, HDPE sheets are designed to withstand harsh environments, making them ideal for both outdoor and indoor applications. Their lightweight nature also makes them easy to handle and install without sacrificing strength or longevity. These sheets come in various colors, most notably black HDPE sheets , white HDPE sheets , and blue HDPE sheets . Each of these color variants has its unique utility and aesthetic appeal, allowing users to choose according to functional and visual requirements. Whether used for packaging, industrial linings, food-grade containers, or construction barriers, HDPE remains a top-performing plastic material known for its reliability. Key Properties...

How to make square cavity in ABS plastic sheet

Preparing Plastic ABS sheet for Painting   In my on going experiments with synthetic surfaces, I recently purchased two sheets of ABS plastic for painting. ABS stands for “acrylonitrile butadiene styrene” and is a thermoplastic polymer. It has multiple uses for such things as computer cases to Legos. It can be run through a 3D printer to make all sorts of things. It can come in almost any color, but is typically available in black or white. In sheet form it often has a rough “haircell” texture on one side, and the opposite side is smooth as glass. I first heard about this material for artwork many years ago from other artists who liked painting on it. One of those people is my friend,  Kim Dow . She told me she gets it in thin sheets, and then has it glued to a foamcore for support. The two I bought are 1/8 inch thick, and 17×21 inches. The price varies online, but these were @ $10 each. The smooth side is sanded down enough to remove the shine, and make it capable to hol...
